Indian Teens and Parents Divided by the Growing Digital World

Bangalore: The rise of internet has its boons and banes on the lives of children and adults. The increasing amount of time Indian teens spend on internet has created a rift between parent-children relationship. The 'Secret Lives of Teens' survey conducted by McAfee shows that even after being told by their parents, teens continue to share important information online.

Today’s young crowd represent themselves as ‘digital natives’ growing up in the internet world and are far more comfortable and skillful than most adults at using internet for education, communication and entertainment. The high level of involvement of teens with the digital world has also exposed them to many potential threats like personal information sharing, cyberbullying and online risks.

The study shows a staggering result related to sharing information online.40 percent of the teenagers were sharing their home address online. Just about 21 percent of the parents who were surveyed believed that their children share information online.

The survey was conducted to uncover the digital division that exists between today’s teens and parents in India. Melanie Duca, consumer marketing director of McAfee said “It's very challenging for parents to educate their technology savvy children. We hope this study provides Indian parents with some key insights and learning's on how to protect their children online,” as reported by Nandagopal Rajan for business today.
